Gem rough means that these pieces are completely natural, just as the Earth made them, AND they are very transparent, crystalline, and of the highest quality. These pieces would be cut and polished by jewelry-makers to make gem-quality precious cuts, rings, earrings, etc. and then sold by the carat. But, while supplies last, you get it straight from the Earth and it couldn’t be more beautiful!
These crystal pieces have a very cool story behind them, too. These are the very last of a stashed treasure that was found in a rock store basement in the 1960s in New York City. Back when watermelon tourmaline was more plentiful (watermelon tourmaline has become more rare than diamonds) a crate of these was shipped up to NYC from Brazil from one of the most precious watermelon tourmaline deposits in the world. The crate was stored in the basement of a rock and treasure shop in NYC. Who knows, maybe John Lennon or Joni Mitchell walked right over these watermelon tourmalines! The shop owner never even got to open the crate (I guess he was very busy?) and when it was found decades later, it had such a thick black layer of dust over it, it was almost overlooked as garbage. A guy and his sons bought the crate from the deceased store-owners family, and now here we are with a window into the past - when watermelon tourmaline could still be found this plentiful and beautiful. This treasure is now all gone. We gratefully purchased the last of it and this will never be back in stock once it’s sold out. Every single piece has crystalline pinks, reds and greens. These are sacred to work with. Keep yours as a precious treasure for life.
